What size line do I need for Yellowfin Tuna fishing?

Yellow fin tuna have gotten more and more popular as a sport fishing species, and with that popularity, the need for concise answers to common questions about tackle types have grown.  The thing is, when an eighteen month old yellow fin can weigh approximately eight pounds and a fish only twice that age can weigh as much as 120 pounds and sizes of mature yellow fin often measuring up to a whopping 400 pounds, the sizes of test line will vary depending on what size fish you plan to catch.

The good news is that there are plenty of products on the market to help you catch the type of fish you are after.  Knowing what they are is a good place to start.  Your local tackle shop will offer line that is specific to the various weights of the fish you are bring in.

Yellow fins are voracious eaters and fierce fighting machines.  If you plan on fishing as part of a charter, your tackle needs will almost certainly be taken care of as part of the package you purchase.  If you are required to provide your own gear, you can rent it or purchase your own. If you rent, the size line you need will probably already be spooled on your reel.  Replacement line should be provided as well.  If you purchase your own, be advised that these fish know how to fight!!  Your gear will take a beating, and light weight gear will not hold up to yellow fin fishing.
