What Size Hooks Should I Use If I’m Trying To Catch A Yellowfin Tuna?

What size hooks should I use if I’m trying to catch a Yellowfin Tuna?

Fishing for yellowfin tuna is a great outing!  If this is your first time out, take the time to talk to the locals to learn more about the way these fish react in their region.  Chances are great that you will enjoy this type of fishing.  A part of enjoying them, you do need to know what type of bait, fishing equipment and even size hooks to bring with you.

Perhaps the best advice to give someone who is fishing for big game fish such as yellow fin tuna is to judge the hook size more according to the bait size than the fish size.  Your target fish will determine whether you need small or large bait.  Larger bait will not stay on a smaller hook, but huge fish can be hooked with relatively small hooks.  If a hook bends, it is usually due to the quality of the hook rather than the size of the fish you catch.

To conduct an experiment, hook something solid, like a piece of wooden deck railing.  Reel with all your might.  You will be amazed at how much force it takes to bend that hook.  Chances are it will come out of the wood, or your line will break before the hook will bend if you are using a good quality hook.  To be somewhat less vague, a good hook for catching yellowfin tuna would be a 9/0 shortshank hook, designed for use offshore.  This hook could seem relatively small, but should do the job well.
