Saltwater Regulations

Where can I find saltwater fishing regulations?

There are several places you can go to find the saltwater fishing regulations. In some states like Florida they can be quite extensive – with some rule applying only to certain waters. The local bait and tackle store would be my first choice. Not only will the owner be able to provide you a booklet outlining the rules but also be able to talk with you and explain them. In Florida for instance there are different rules concerning the type of hooks you are allowed to use depending on whether you are fishing the gulf or Atlantic waters. The internet is another excellent source of information regarding the rules and regulations of saltwater fishing. I would start with accessing a search engine like Google or Yahoo. Type in the phrase Department of Natural Resources along with the name of the state you are inquiring about. You should then be able to access a page that outlines all of the applicable rules for saltwater fishing with in the waters of that state. It is very important that you follow all of the regulations in place. These regulations are designed to help the fishery as a whole. Many of the rules are quite different that in past years. In Florida for instance you must use circle hooks when fishing from a vessel in the water on in the Gulf. If you are fishing from shore or fishing on the Atlantic side of Florida you can use standard “J” hooks. Rules like this are why it is important to research and avoid a large fine.
