Saltwater Bait Fish

What bait fish do you suggest saltwater?

There are several different species of baitfish you can use while fishing saltwater. I will in the following paragraphs discuss the main fish used for bait in saltwater. Pilchards are the smallest perhaps most common bait fish used. They are bright silver in color and very active if placed on a hook of proper size. Many of them run quite small and are not good selections for large target fish. For Snappers and other small to medium fish they are great bait. Their one drawback is longevity. With a well aerated live well they simply will not stay alive very long in a bucket as they are not very hardy. You also need to take due care when hooking them as they will die quickly on your hook if not carefully hooked in a non vital area. Pinfish are the next step up from pilchards in size. Pinfish are shaped much like a bluegill and share the spiny dorsal fin which of course is a drawback when using for bait. Pinfish are popular however due to their ease in catching and cost compared to other varieties of bait fish. They are a very hardy fish that will stay on your hook for quite some time alive. The Mullet is perhaps the most versatile bait fish. Small members of this species, called “finger mullet” can be used to catch smaller game fish. You can also hook Mullet up to a pound or more to target large Sharks, Grouper or other huge fish.
