Putting The Wrappers On Snappers

This is a great service, Dan. Thanks! I am going bonefishing on Crooked Island in April. I want to bring a spinning rod for quick shots at barracuda. Besides the green tube, can you suggest a couple of other lures? If we go out to a reef for snapper and jacks, could you recommend a couple of lures for that if we run out of bait? Thank you again.

Good baits for barracudas are anything that moves fast, and is flashy. Drone Spoons are one of the best, in sliver and gold colors. Hot pink works good, too. Johnson Silver Minnows can illicit vicious strikes. Large Daredevels, Acme Spoons, and Cleos are all deadly on both barracuda and bluefish. Yo-Zuri Cystal Minnows with mirror sides are great, as well as any of the larger Rapalas.

For snappers and jacks, it’s hard to beat a Sabalo Popper. Next on the list would once again be the Yo-Zuris Crystal Minnow. Mirro Lures are great for snappers and jacks, as well as Halco Roosta Poppers. I’ve always had good luck on Mangrove, and Mutton Snappers, and Crevalle Jacks with bucktail jigs, especially when rigged two-in-tandem under a popping cork. I also have done very well with soft-bait shrimp imitations, and Sassy Shads in the larger sizes. My best colors for Sassy Shads in saltwater have been black.grey, black metalflake.grey, blue/white, blue metalflake/white, and purple.

Happy fishing.
