Ocean Reel Choice

How do I know which of the ocean fishing reels to buy?

The choice of fishing reel is highly dependant on the type of fishing you will be performing. I will outline some of the options. If you are fishing the grass flats of the Gulf side of Southern Florida the most important feature is a smooth high quality drag system on the reel. In these areas you will be fishing with very light line so you do not spook the fish that inhabit these shallow waters. Tarpon, Permit and other fish commonly caught on the flats get quite large and can rip well over one hundred yards of line off a spool in a matter of seconds. Without a high quality drag system on your reel you will encounter numerous break offs. When fishing over the wrecks and coral reefs on the Atlantic side of Southern Florida your needs change. Now you are fishing water that is anywhere from thirty to one hundred feet deep. You are putting your bait right next to the reefs and wrecks that hold large amounts of fish. The key factor in choosing a reel now is power. When a large fish grabs your line it will try to move into the wreck once it knows it has been hooked. If you allow the fish to do this it will likely sever your line. A reel with the proper gear ratio to give oyu power will help prevent his from happening. You want a reel that takes in as much line per turn fo the handle that you can find.
