What species of fish can you catch in the ocean in New Jersey?
There are many different kinds of fish available in the saltwater areas of New Jersey. I will outline some of the more highly sought after species of fish. Bluefish are right at the top of many anglers list of favorite fish to catch. They are available up and down the Atlantic Coast and when running are a great fish to catch for New Jersey anglers. They are a ravenous fish known for traveling in large schools and hitting a bait with ferocious intentions. They are highly prized for their fighting abilities but not so much for their table fare. Striped Bass recently have perhaps become the most sought after fish in the upper Atlantic. They can grow as large as fifty pounds or more and provide the best trophy fishery currently in the New Jersey area. It would be hard to find a fish that pound for pound fights as hard as the Atlantic Mackerel. This fish generally averages just a few pounds but when fishing with light tackle provides great sport for most anglers. Sharks also inhabit the waters of New Jersey and are an excellent sporting fish. Most of the sharks close are smaller sharks in the ten to fifty pound class. All provide great fishing value however. New Jersey is also known for several fish that are excellent if you are looking to cook and eat your catch. Flounder, Cod and Haddock can all be caught in New Jersey waters. All provide excellent table fare and have value as a sport fish as well.
