Inland Gear

I would like help with inland saltwater fishing – gear? bait?

The are a wide variety of gear you can use for inland saltwater fishing. There are a variety of different species of fish you can target; each has its own requirements for gear and bait. For the purposes of this article I am going to discuss fishing in the inland areas around Cape Coral through Marco Island in Florida. I have a great deal of fishing experience in these waters for species such as Snappers, Snook, Redfish, Goliath grouper, Tarpon and Sharks. In total I have caught over forty different species of fish in these waters with the above mentioned species being the most commonly caught. If you are on a budget the quality of the fishing reel is far more important than your fishing rod. “Almost any name brand or in the twenty to thirty dollar range will be more than enough to handle this kid of fishing. You reel however needs to hold a large enough amount of line to handle the long fast runs some of these species of fish will make. I prefer to have two hundred yards minimum. A well oiled smooth running drag is also a must to properly play a large fish once it is hooked. For bait there are two main staples in these waters. A lively jumbo shrimp will catch just about anything from a small Snapper to a Tarpon weighing over one hundred pounds. If you want to eliminate the smaller fish switch to a live pinfish which will also enhance your chance of catching Sharks.
