I live in south florida, palm beach area. Im from up north where mostly i would fish rivers and lakes for trout and bass. I have been trying to catch some saltwater fish here in florida wih no luck. Im using live or frozen minnows, from a pier or jetty, also ive been trying some jigs. Ive been trying for about 2 weeks with no luck at all. What am i doing wrong?
My first suggestion would be to forget the minnows and switch to shrimp. Shrimp is certainly the bait of choice for most saltwater fisherman. When targeting larger species switch to fish like mullet, pinfish and pilchards. When live bait fishing in saltwater it is important to keep the bait at or near the bottom. When fishing from a pier the best place to fish is directly next to the pier. It is much better to keep your bait directly by the pier along with the many small fish that gravitate there. It is much better than casting way out into the open water. Frozen bait will catch fish but is not as good as live bait and not as good as freshly cut bait. I would not try using jigs from a pier; bait fishing is much more productive. Jigs certainly have uses in saltwater. If you can find shallow grass flats a jig or better yet a jig tipped with a piece of shrimp is an excellent offering. What I suggest you do is talk with the other fishermen who are having more success. Tide plays a large role is fishing success. At one location it may be best to fish the incoming tide, a mile away it may be just the opposite situation. I have seen situations where people were catching many fish of the north side of the pier but nothing off the south side of the same pier. You need to make a few basic changes and learn and you will see your results improve dramatically.
