I live on florida’s gulf coast. I walk the beach often. I have found a peice of bone and I am trying to find out what sort of fish it has come from. It looks like part of the upperjaw bone of a marlin. I have a picture that I could send you. I will try to discribe it since you can not view photos in this format. It is only a peice. approx 3 inches wide but has a spear looking shape down the center that is approx 1 inch diameter. the pecie seems to have been cut to make it only 3 inches wide. I think this because the sides of the peice are jagged. the tip of the “spear head” has been broken off and it only extend 2 1/2 inches past the wider peice. it resembles a rectangle shape wish an angel on the end where this spear shape protrudes. Did I explain it so you can understand? I have looked up bone structures on marlins but haven’t had much luck. Could you possibly help me? I could send you the picture if you could send me an alternate address? thank you, Beth Floridayungblood@aol.com Floridayungblood@yahoo.com Floridayungblood@hotmail.com

I am not sure right off hand what you have found. Might I suggest taking the piece you found to one of the outfitters in the area or a biologist for examination? It could be just about anything. The outfitters in your area can probably look at the piece and tell you for sure if it is a marlin bone or they may tell you something else. I am not really a bone expert, but I can tell you what I think. Take the bone to an outfitter or even the DNR. They might have some answers. It sounds like you have found something, but only an expert will be able to tell you what it is. I am not exactly sure of your location in Florida, but there are outfitters and charter companies all over the gulf coast. One of these guys might be able to help you or even point you in another direction. As I said, I am no expert. Even if I would see the picture, it would not do much for me. You would be better off with someone that specializes in bones or all the fish species on the gulf coast. On the other hand, you may have found something other than a fish. You just never know until you take it to a professional or expert that knows about bones and bone structures of all the species of fish. Do write back and let me know what you find out about the bone you found.
