How Many Saltwater Rods ?

How many saltwater rods do I need?

The number of saltwater rods you need really depends on what different varieties of fishing you will be attempting. If you are fishing from shore for small to medium size fish I would recommend using a light to medium action rod of about six feet in length. This will allow you to catch a variety of fish from Snappers to Snook, Redfish and other fish in the ten pound size range. If you are fishing for larger fish from shore like Barracuda or Sharks you of course need a heavier action rod both to set the hook and to fight the fish effectively. Special fishing conditions also require special rods. If you are bridge fishing for instance you will need a stout rod that will allow you to horse the fish away from pilings and other form of structure that will cause problems. Deep Sea fishing can also require special equipment. If you like to fish the reefs of the Florida Keys for instance you will often be fishing water that is close to 100 feet deep. You will be using a heavy reel that requires a heavy rod. A light action rod will not be sufficient to set a hook in water that deep with so much line off the reel. If you will be casting small lure long distance you may want to switch to a longer rod designed for long distance casting. Matching the type of rod to the method of fishing and species you are angling for is essential to get the most of your next fishing trip.
