How do I choose the right line?

What is 1+1?

Line is probably more important than the average person would realize, but the type line you should choose has so many variables it is hard to narrow it down to just one answer. For that reason, here are a summary of several types of line, the benefits of the different types, and a few situations where each tends to work best! Monofiliment is basic nylon fishing line. It is both strong and elastic in texture. Stren is a popular monofiliment line. This line has done a lot to increase the ease and popularity in fishing. Monofiliment is one of the most economical choices in fishing line, remaining less expensive than other popular choices. It is important to note that monofiliment fishing line is good line, but if you buy cheaper brands, there might not be the attention to quality that the better grades of line do, and if your line does not hold up well, you could lose a great catch. Braided dacron line is not as strong, is susceptible to abrasion, and does not stretch well. The lack of ability to stretch translates into a higher incidence of breakage, again resulting in loss of your catch. Microfilaments and superlines are braided lines made of synthetic fibers that are very thin and many times stronger than steel. The downside to these types of line is that they are very expensive, they do not hold knots as well, and they tend to snag and tangle easily, but improvements have been considerable. All in all, once you determine which you can afford, base your decision on the size fish (which requires higher test strength line) the conditions (dark, murky, or night time conditions requite high visibility line) and the type fish you are hoping to catch. Easily spooked fish that inhabit clearer waters often see the line and shy away, so clear, low visibility line, or superline works best in those conditions.
