Favorite Rig

What is your favorite ocean fishing rig?

My favorite ocean fishing rig is a simple rig I use for fishing the reefs and deep water wrecks in the Florida Keys. The first part of the rig is the main line. Since I am fishing water that can be from sixty to one hundred feet deep I like a large reel that can hold a large amount of line. The key concept to understand is that fish once hooked will try to bring your line into the reef and cut it. I therefore like to use braided line for its resistance to stretching. The lack of stretch makes it more difficult to take my line into the reef to secure their release. The problem of course is that braided line is easy to see and spooks the fish. I get around this issue by using a special rig I designed. I tie a high quality swivel to the main line, placing my weight above the swivel. I cannot stress enough how important it is to use a high quality swivel. I then use fluorocarbon leader material to tie to the other end of the swivel. Fluorocarbon leader material works best because of its high invisibility factor. My preference is making a leader that is two feet long. I like to keep several leaders on hand because you will need to change them regularly as the reef wears your line. I then tie a hook of the proper size to the end of the leader and I am ready to fish. This is a simple rig that is dynamite for fishing the reefs.
