Saltwater Bait

Grouper can be a bit of a hassle when it comes to determining what sort of saltwater bait to use. This is because they are pretty picky and often refuse to bite on anything that isn’t natural to their own habitat. In open waters, grouper tend to feed on small crustaceans such as crabs and crawfish, as well as smaller fish. They may also feed on squid where it’s available. However, before you pick your bait, you should know which of these critters is the most common in the environment where you tend to fish so that you can choose the same saltwater bait in hopes of attracting a large amount of grouper. It’s important to get as many bites as possible with these monsters, since several of them will be lost because of their habit of returning to their holes with the bait in their mouth.

Halibut are an entirely different matter altogether. These fish look for saltwater bait by smell rather than sight. This means that you should use a pungent bait that has a scent which will permeate the waters for a good distance, attracting several fish to the general vicinity. Also, it is best to change the saltwater bait every twenty to thirty minutes to assure that the smell remains fresh in the water and continues to draw your prey.
