Reds normally spawn between August and November but if a sudden cold
spell hits it can kill some of the reds located in the shallow water.
They feed mainly off of shrimp, crustaceans, mollusks, finger mullet,
crabs, smaller fish and pinfish. You can use these for bait with a
great amount of success plus a variety of artificial spoons and jigs.
Both hard and soft plastic lures can be used successfully to catch red
fish. If you look closely at the water and notice it moving slightly
for no apparent reason, it may be a school of redfish swimming by.
Therefore, being observant is one of the best things you can do to
locate and catch red fish.
When the tide rolls in, the baitfish follow and the shrimp and crabs
become extremely active. The red fish move in to take advantage of the
abundant food source. When the tide moves out, the best place to search
for red fish would be around channels and similar locations. They can
also be found gathered together under docks, near mangroves and around
grassy areas where there are sandy white potholes.
Red fish can tolerate the cold water better than other species so when
the temperature begins to change they will usually continue to feed as
normal. When fishing for reds, it is important to have high quality
gear. Since they are such a strong species using poor quality or worn
out equipment will lead to a lot of disappointments.
