If you are having difficulty, just change your rigging, change your
bait, change your location, change your depth or leader...just use the
trial and error until you happen on a tactic that will entice the
tarpon out of hiding and onto your hook.
It is not difficult to set the hook when fishing for tarpon. The mouth
of the tarpon is very hard. Really, all you need to do is to put the
rod tip in the water, and reel hard once you feel the tarpon bite.
Another way to set your hook tarpon fishing is to let ten feet of line
drop back and then let the line tighten up as the fish swims out and
begins stripping line off the reel. Use light tackle for tarpon
fishing. About 30 pound conventional or 20 pound spinning gear is good,
or for open water fishing when your prey is smaller tarpon, you may
choose to drop down to 15 pound tackle.
Have fun catching when you head out to catch these amazing fish.
