Try live soft shell sand crabs or chunks of fish native to the area,
such as squid or mackerel, as bait. Many times the fish that move into
the surf to feed are looking for dead fish anyway, and the pieces on
your hook are as good as any! If you need frozen bait, shrimp,
anchovies, mussels, or clams will work well.
Consider using a sliding sinker to rig your line. The fish can not feel
a sliding sinker and that will quell the inclination to drop bait when
they feel that telltale tug on the line.
Contrary to popular belief, surf fishing is not just for kids and
adults enjoy it just as much as anyone. We promise, you will enjoy it
if you give it a good try (and remember practice is the only way to
improve your skill level and do well.) If you don't have a boat, or for
those times when it is just not feasible to get out on your boat and
devote a whole day to fishing on the water, surf fishing is a fantastic
alternative. Just use a little knowledge, and come prepared to enjoy
the wind and the wonderful surf fishing available to you as a shore
angler!
