The next knot we will mention is the surgeon's knot. This is a very
secure knot, and will work well in a variety of applications. To tie a
surgeon's knot, place two lines, one against the other, and overlap
them about 9 inches. Acting as if you have only one line, tie a simple
overhand knot. Pull the leader line completely through this overhand
loop. Pull the leader through the loop once more. Pull the remaining
end through this loop.
Finally, work the knot into the proper shape. This can be performed on
two different diameters of lines, and works well to tie on leaders or
if you are using braided line with a mono leader for spooky fish in
clear waters. If you are tying two lines of disparate sizes, you might
want to roll one of the lines on a spool or card so you can pass it
through the loop more easily.
When it comes to knots and techniques for them, do take some time to
practice them. Just like tying your shoes used to be
difficult to do, with a bit of extra time and work on these, you are
sure to see great improvements in your skills and your overall
style. Of course, you may develop others that are your
favorite saltwater fishing knots. Whenever you take the time
to learn something new, it may be a bit more difficult than you expect,
but work at it!)
