Don't make the mistake of thinking that you will only catch small fish when beach fishing. You will find that some species found along the coastline can grow to some amazing sizes. You'll want to be prepared for this by having gear that can handle some of the larger fish and it's always a good idea to have a net handy.  
 
If you're after the smaller species of fish, then using a fishing rod that is either 10 feet long or 12 feet long should work fine. However, if you're anticipating reeling in some of the larger species, then you'll want to have at least a 13 foot rod on hand for the best results.
 
When it comes to the best baits to use you have several options. You can use live bait if you prefer but artificial bails also can be very productive. With the different species of fish found along the beach, you can try different types of lures to see what kind of results you have. Experimenting is usually the best way to learn what works and what don't. Just make sure you have a good selection with you when you head out.
 
Talking to the locals will help you learn where the most bites are being located and which baits seem to be working the best. Most anglers are usually happy to share this information. You can also take a look at some of the fishing reports for the area to gather information that can help you prepare for your fishing trip. These reports are filled with all types of information such as where different species are located, which baits are working the best and the best times to fish for each species. Having an idea of where to go and what type of bait to take along will increase your odds of reeling in a nice catch.  
 
Be sure to use equipment that has been designed for the salt air and water or you'll begin to have problems with your gear very quickly. It will start to corrode and it will soon have to be replaced. It's hard to tell the difference between some of the freshwater gear and saltwater gear just by glancing at them but the difference is in the way they're made. Saltwater gear is designed to hold up better in this type of environment for better performance and to allow them to last longer. Even when using gear made for saltwater fishing, it's always a good idea to rinse off the equipment with fresh water after every fishing trip.
