From May to July, you can easily find big schools of speckled trout. You can try techniques such as surf fishing, bottom fishing, and wade or surf fishing, but I think the most productive method of fishing for specs in the summer months is drift fishing. Just concentrate on the areas over oyster beds and the areas you know have a sandy or rocky bottom, and you should have good luck. As far as bait is concerned during this time of year a good bet is tandem rigging an artificial split tail beetle or minnow.


Locating the specs is pretty much a trial and error process where you just need to begin at the surface and work your way to the bottom. Depending on the conditions of the water, they really can be almost anywhere, but if it is rough water, they will be closer to the bottom, and when it is good weather, they can be suspended or on the top, particularly if they are feeding.

The fish are definitely worth the work that you invest in them. Take care and look for local help from experts if you still have trouble.
