The halibut is a unique species of fish that can put up a struggle you won't soon forget but if you present your bait in an unnatural way they will avoid you altogether. The nickname "masters of ambush" was given to the halibut because they will lie on the bottom of the water and wait for food to swim by. Many times they are half way buried making them almost invisible to other species. Therefore, it is vital that you keep your bait just above the bottom of the water so it will attract the attention of the halibut. However, you also want to keep your line as straight as possible so it won't be visible to the halibut. By allowing your bait to bounce off the bottom it will cause a thumping sound and this vibration will draw the halibut to you bait.
