Do I need any special equipment for Surf Fishing?

Many people either do not have a boat do not choose to fish from a boat.  Those people who, for whatever reason, do not fish from a boat, but enjoy fishing, often participate in the sport of surf fishing.  The following is a list of special tackle you will need for surf fishing.

Special rods, called surf rods are used.  These are large and heavy duty enough to throw six ounces of weight plus what is often large amounts of bait, up to a hundred yards beyond the surf.

Spinning reels that are of exceptionally heavy construction are most often used.  These heavy duty components must be used, because the size of fish you pull in requires it, but more than that, to achieve the length of casts you need to get past the surf requires specialized equipment.

In spite of this, surf fishermen argue time and time again about what it takes to achieve the extremely long casts required for surf fishing.  It is clear that several factors come into play.  The length of your rod, the reel design, as well as the type of rod guides you use all play a part in the length of your casts as does the technique of the angler.

The type weight you use also effects the quality of your surf fishing.  Plan on using a multiple ounce pyramid weight for the best results.  This shape allows the weight to sink to the bottom and dig in a bit to help hold your line tight, preventing it from coming right back in with the tide.
