Can you give me a list of saltwater fishing tackle to get started with for a beginner?

The answer to this question depends on what kind of fishing you will be doing. You can fish for fish ranging from one to two hundred pounds in saltwater. Some anglers wade shallow grass flats, some fish from the surf and others fish from the end of long piers that extend into deep water. I would advise a heavy action rod for starters. Most saltwater fish fight very well and this combined with the current make a stout rod a necessity. Unless you are doing a specialized form of saltwater fishing the benefits of a light action rod are outweighed by the need for a heavy backbone to fight large fish. You will want a reel that holds at least two hundred yards of line. I would advise using line in the ten to twenty pound weight class depending on the type of fish you are targeting. You will need a variety of hook sizes as you will be suing many different live types of bait. You will also need a variety of different weights to keep your bait near the bottom. Sometimes when fishing a pier you will need a three ounce weight to hold the bait in place. When fishing a shallower shoreline however a simple split shot will suffice. An aerated bucket to keep your bait alive is also very important. When you fish saltwater from shore you will be using baits like shrimp, pilchards, pinfish and blue crabs. These baits are best when not only kept alive but also fresh and active. The aerated bucket will help you in this effort.
