Fishing researcher, Dan Eggertsen, answers a variety of questions concerning how you can catch saltwater fish quickly and easily.

Can I use freshwater fishing gear for saltwater?

Category: Uncategorized

Can I use my freshwater gear for saltwater fishing or do I need to purchase all new stuff.

In most cases, tackle is manufactured to be used for both freshwater and saltwater fishing, that includes your rods, line and reels. The important thing that you want to remember, however, is that when saltwater fishing- your equipment is going to be exposed to the salt which can quickly corrode many items. You’ll want to make sure that you’re carefully rinsing all of your tackle after every fishing trip and you’ll want to keep it all well lubricated. You will, however, want to make sure that you’re using lures and hooks that are made for salt water. While lures will hold up pretty well, the hooks will rust quickly. Rapala and Storm both make saltwater lures and the difference is really all in the hook. If you’re planning on using jigs or leadheads, the same concept would apply. You can either buy the freshwater versions and change out the hooks or just buy the ones that are manufactured with saltwater fishing in mind. Your swivels and snaps should be fine as well. You probably won’t have to spend too much outfitting yourself for saltwater fishing if you already have freshwater tackle unless you’re going after the really big game fish.
