Big Game fishing

What is my best chance to catch a very large fish in Florida ?

If you are truly after a huge fish that is somewhat easy to find and catch perhaps the Goliath Grouper is for you. The Goliath Grouper is a fish that is caught anywhere from ten to several hundred pounds. You can find them in water that is very shallow and close to shore as well. This past summer I caught a fifty pound fish in a small canal about one hundred feet wide. I caught many more out on the boat I rented, one of them well over one hundred pounds that was caught in water only nine feet deep. The key thing is to find some form of structure. A wreck with established food chain is the best place to find huge Goliath Grouper. Docks and other forms of structure also work well. You will be bait fishing for this species, either live bait or freshly killed bait. The size of the bait you will use definitely impacts the size of fish caught. Large Grouper like to eat large fish. The size of their mouths is enormous compared to their body size. Even a Grouper of fifteen pounds can easily swallow a two pound fish if necessary. One of the Grouper I caught this past summer spit out three large lobsters as he was being landed. Keep your tackle stout, use a large high quality sharpened hook. Since you are fishing structure you will often need to horse the fish away from line cutting obstructions. I advise using eighty pound line without a great deal of stretch.
